Cuban Yaniet Marrero wins Central American and Caribbean Chess Tournament

Cuban Grand Master (GM) Yaniet Marrero achieved eight points from possible nine to win the scepter of the women’s Central American and Caribbean chess tournament, held at the Salvadoran capital.

Yaniet, who is included in Cuban Olympic team for the next event in Tromso, finished unbeaten with one draw and seven wins, one of them against Guatemalan International Master (IM) Silvia Sotomayor, who seconded her in the standings, according to the specialized site www.chess-results.com.

The also Guatemala's IM Carolina Mazariegos finished third with seven units and the satisfaction of being the only one who was not defeated by Marrero.

The event, which used the Swiss system, brought together 14 players from Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
