Manchester United were handed a reality check on Tuesday evening as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

The Parisiens were without both Edinson Cavani and Neymar but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dream start at Old Trafford was brought to a crashing end nonetheless.

Angel Di Maria, returning to Manchester, was the focus of attention and the Argentine contributed with two assists on an eventful night for him as he was the target of a bottle thrown from a home supporter.

Presnel Kimpembe opened the scoring in the second half as he headed home a Di Maria corner, climbing above Nemanja Matic.

It was two just over five minutes later as Kylian Mbappe drew level with Ronaldo's tally of 14 Champions League goals. Di Maria again set it up, setting the World Cup winner up with a low cross into the box that allowed him to convert beyond De Gea.

United's evening was made worse when Paul Pogba was shown a red card in the 89th minute for a poor challenge on Dani Alves.
