United Kingdom Brings New Rape and Sexual Assault Charges Against Russell Brand

British authorities on Tuesday brought new rape and sexual assault charges against comedian Russell Brand, who is already facing similar charges related to four women.

The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the new charges—one count of rape and one count of sexual assault against Brand—are related to two additional women. The alleged offenses occurred in 2009, according to the agency.

Brand, 50, had previously been charged in April with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. Those charges were filed after an 18-month investigation that began when four women alleged they were assaulted by the controversial comedian.

Prosecutors indicated those offenses occurred between 1999 and 2005: one in the English coastal town of Bournemouth and the other three in London. Brand pleaded not guilty to those charges in a London court earlier this year.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on January 20 regarding the two new charges brought against him. A trial has also been scheduled for June of next year, expected to last four to five weeks.

The star of “Get Him to the Greek,” known for his risqué comedy routines and his battles with drugs and alcohol, has retreated from mainstream media in recent years. He has built a large online following with videos blending wellness, conspiracy theories, and religious discussions.

When the initial charges were announced in April, Brand indicated he welcomed the opportunity to prove his innocence.

“I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord,” he stated in a social media video. “I was a drug addict, a sex addict, a jerk. But what I never was is a rapist. I have never engaged in non-consensual activities. I pray they can see that when they look in my eyes.”

The Associated Press does not name victims of alleged sexual violence, and British law protects their identity from the media for life.
