National Cybersecurity Event Inaugurated in Cuba

The Technological Event of the 4th National Cybersecurity Conference was inaugurated today at the Central Palace of Computing in the capital with the keynote address "Security in Operational Technologies."

Focus on Industrial Systems

Lisset Martínez González, Director of Automation at the Ministry of Industries (Mindus), outlined the key events that have shaped the industry's development and detailed the work being done to reduce the risks of cyberattacks.

Martínez González specified a series of measures to prevent, detect, and respond to such incidents in industrial control systems. These measures include the assignment of roles and responsibilities, vulnerability management, secure protocols, and the supervision of remote access.

Legacy and Current Challenges

During the keynote lecture “Fidel in Cybersecurity,” Omar Pérez Salomón, an official of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CC-PCC), stated that the undisputed leader of the Revolution was a great architect in introducing Information and Communication Technologies for the service of the people's education and culture. He added that this idea is implicit in Fidel Castro's conception of development, independence, and sovereignty.

Pablo Julio Pla Feria, Vice Minister of Communications, highlighted that the meeting brings together recognized professionals in the defense of cyberspace to share best practices and strengthen public awareness in this area. He noted that the current digital era has brought an exponential growth of risks online.

Vice Minister Pla Feria emphasized that the event is taking place shortly after Hurricane Melissa impacted eastern Cuba, in addition to the country's complex epidemiological situation and the constant siege of the U.S. government and the "criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade."

Event Details and Tributes

The meeting featured the inauguration of the photographic exhibition “Cybersecurity and its Protagonists: the Legacy of Fidel,” and work was organized into committees.

The technological event of the 4th National Cybersecurity Conference will conclude on November 28 and will be accompanied by an expository showcase. The event was presided over by Yudí Mercedes Rodríguez Hernández, a member of the Secretariat of the CC-PCC; Marydé Fernández López, Vice Head of the Ideological Department of the CC-PCC; First Colonel Darío Dominics Bravo, Head of the Secretariat of the National Cybersecurity Group; and representatives from the PCC, the Ministry of the Interior, the Armed Forces, and other sectors.

Both the conference and the event are dedicated to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz (1926-2016) on the centenary of his birth, recognizing him as a man whose transformative vision drove the nation's scientific and technological development.
