La Cruz Opens with Victory at 2025 Liverpool World Championships

The two-time Olympic champion (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020) and five-time world titleholder Julio César La Cruz (+90 kg) defeated Azerbaijan’s Mahammad Abdullayev today by unanimous decision (5-0) in his debut at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool.

Aiming for a Sixth World Crown
With his signature style and boxing mastery, “La Sombra” began his campaign with confidence as he pursues a historic sixth world crown, a record currently shared only by Felix Savón among men, and India’s Mangte Chungneijang “Mary” Kom among women.

Cuban Team Results So Far
The Olympic-format world championship, hosted at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, began Thursday. To date, the Cuban delegation has earned two victories and suffered two defeats. Debutant Luis Enrique Vinent (60 kg) also won convincingly, 5-0 against Croatia’s Vide Parkacin, while Jorge Cuéllar (70 kg) and Nelson Williams (90 kg) fell in their opening bouts.

Global Participation
The world event in the United Kingdom brings together more than 500 boxers from 66 countries across five continents, competing in 10 weight categories for both men and women.
