Deteriorating conditions reported in British migrant centers

London, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor urged the British Government to improve conditions in migrant processing centers, following reports that the situation has deteriorated since his last visit.

It is really worrying. We were there (in July) when things were not so bad, but the information we are getting from very credible sources is that the situation has deteriorated significantly since then, Taylor told Sky News television.

The official’s statements coincided with the publication on Tuesday by the Prison Inspectors Department of a report on a surprise visit three months ago to the Manston, Western Jet Foil, and Lydd Airport centers in southern England.

According to the report, some migrants did not have access to cell phones to inform their families of their status, and others had to wait up to 30 hours to be processed.

In the case of Manston, a transit center where detainees must only stay for a maximum of 24 hours, some of them have been held for nearly a month, and others reported that they were not allowed to close the door completely when using the toilets, and that they had to sleep on the floor.

The official report came to light at a time when Minister of the Interior Suella Braverman is facing a wave of criticisms for the statement she made on Monday in Parliament.

During her appearance at the House of Commons, Braverman called the constant crossing of irregular migrants across the English Channel an “invasion” and promised to strengthen the asylum system, which, she said, is broken.
