The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, will circulate today among the members of the Security Council the report on the mission of the multilateral organization in Colombia, its challenges in recent months and perspectives.

As that 15-member body officially ended its sessions for this year on December 22, the meeting to discuss that report was scheduled for January 21, 2021, according to the schedule posted here.

As the highest representative of the United Nations warned in his previous report on the subject, the persistent insecurity in Colombia continues as one of the main vulnerabilities for the peace process.

According to the head of the United Nations mission in that South American country, Carlos Ruiz, the Covid-19 pandemic made the already complex scenario of the peace process more difficult.

In recent months, he indicated in his most recent briefing at the Security Council in October, many ex-combatants and their families suffer the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic, and even more so the challenges faced by former guerrillas outside the former areas of territorial training and reintegration.

In fact, in many of the areas most affected by the conflict in Colombia, violence continues and massacres and murders are registered, denounced Ruiz Massieu.

Therefore, it demanded the cooperation of all local actors, including the Government and civil society.

He also called for considering the implementation of the Peace Agreement as an essential part of the recovery plans from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Efforts to build peace and reconstruction efforts in the face of the pandemic in Colombia must be complementary, insist the highest authorities of the UN.

Since the signing of the Peace Agreement, the United Nations mission in Colombia confirmed more than 300 attacks against former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army and over 200 murders.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations denounce impunity for these crimes and demand accountability for these murders and other serious violations.
