Caibarien, Cuba, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) The resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Cuba, Consuelo Vidal, praised the efforts promoted by the ProAct project, to strengthen community resilience in seven municipalities of the central province of Villa Clara.

The official considered relevant the work carried out as part of the initiative to mitigate the effects of climate change, and in benefit of food security in the regions involved.

The project is very important because it achieves progress in these two objectives identified as a commitment of support to Cuba, she said, while expressing the European Union’s willingness to provide assistance in relation to these issues.

She also highlighted how progress was made on the proposed goals despite the devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and ratified the willingness of the United Nations System to offer support in this area.

The purpose of PorAct responded to the need to strengthen the response to climatological events with emphasis on sustainable food production in the municipalities of Corralillo, Caibarien, Sagua la Grande, Quemado de Güines, Encrucijada, Camajuani and Remedios, affected by the drought and the damage caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

It is advised by the United Nations World Food Program (UNFP) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and funded with two million euros from the European Union.

The workshop on the results of the project began on Wednesday with the presence of Major General (R) Ramon Pardo, Chief of the National General Staff of the Cuban Civil Defense.

The workshop on the results of the ProAct project will be held until Friday at the Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas Hotel, and will be attended by about 100 specialists from the ministries of Science, Technology and Environment, Education, Agriculture, Health and Civil Defense.
