UK continues anti-Russian rhetoric over Ukraine situation

British government on Sunday continued with its anti-Russian rhetoric, amid escalation of tensions between Moscow and member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) over the Ukraine situation.

In separate statements on Sunday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Liz Truss reiterated their threats of sanctions and other retaliation against Russia in case of an alleged attack on Ukraine.

Present situation is increasingly becoming worrying: I continue urging Russia to enter into negotiations and avoid reckless and catastrophic invasion, Mr. Johnson posted on Twitter.

Ms. Truss, on the other hand, told Sky News her government is drafting a sanction bill covering a wide range of Russian economic activities that would come into effect in the event of a future attack on Ukraine.

UK, the United States and the rest of the NATO members accused Russia of a possible military offensive against Ukraine, whose government has requested membership in the USA-led military alliance.

The Russian government still maintains more than 100,000 soldiers close to the Ukrainian border, but denies any plans to attack, saying its troops are moving within its own territory for defensive purposes only.

Amid escalating tensions with Moscow, London weeks ago sent 2,000 light anti-tank weapons to Kiev, and military personnel to train Ukrainian soldiers.
