Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez visited former President Lucía Topolansky, widow of ex-President José Mujica, ahead of his first concert in Uruguay’s capital.
Founder of the Cuban Nueva Trova movement, Rodríguez has long expressed admiration for Mujica, to whom he dedicated the song “Más porvenir” months before the former president’s death. The song was part of a project launched by Argentine musician León Gieco, titled “Una canción para Pepe.”
“Dear Pepe, this is my greeting from Cuba to you and Lucía. I composed these verses in 2009 when I heard you say certain things, and a few days ago I finished them, inspired by the call of our dear León Gieco. An infinite hug,” Rodríguez said in a video.
Topolansky welcomed Rodríguez into the kitchen of the home she shared for years with Mujica at the Rincón del Cerro farm, a rural area west of the capital. A photo of the meeting was shared on Instagram by Javier “El Turco” Dinardi, a collaborator of the presidential couple.
The Cuban artist will perform his first concert in Uruguay tomorrow at the Antel Arena, returning to the city after 12 years. Another show is scheduled for Saturday, the 18th, at the same venue. Prior to his visit to Uruguay, Rodríguez held concerts in Santiago, Chile, and Buenos Aires. His tour will also include stops in Peru and Colombia.
