Madrid, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) The San Sebastián International Film Festival of Spain began a new stage in the vindication of people's rights, by eliminating the gender distinction in awards for interpretation.

During the presentation of the official poster for the 69th edition, the organizers pointed out that from now on the Silver Shells will be awarded for the best leading and cast performance, which can be awarded equally to both.

To be held from September 17th to 25th, Zinemaldia supports the concept of gender as a social and political construction, which is why it makes no sense to assess the actions according to this category, since the main thing must be the quality of the work.

The second of its kind to adopt this position - the Berlin Film Festival, Germany assumed this provision in last February - San Sebastián reinvented its regulations to also recognize the work of identities that are not ascribed to the male or female genders.

The gender report published by the contest organizers at the closing of the 68th edition highlighted a greater number of women professionals, although the percentage still remains below 40 percent in the areas of direction, music and script.

Said data and the recent measures outline the entity's commitment to continue promoting the projects of the directors and screenwriters, as well as eliminating the gaps between sexes and gender identities in the industry.

Still without defining the conditions in which the 2021 edition will take place, the organizers keep a watchful eye on feminist movements related to the movie industry, while solving the obstacles imposed by Covid-19.
