Managua, Mar 24 (Prensa Latina) "illiteracy is a virus caused by the capitalist system," said President Daniel Ortega on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the Great Literacy Crusade carried out in Nicaragua in 1980.

During an event at the Olof Palme convention center, in the capital city, the President stated that eradicating poverty or illiteracy is no priority to the capitalist system, which Nicaragua had to face after the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution.

The president said that the campaign only could have taken place with the Revolution, otherwise the country would have remained in dark illiteracy.

He recalled how after the triumph of 1979, the economic indexes given to Nicaragua by international organizations showed good results, however, the level of illiteracy rounded 60%.

Ortega spoke of the National Literacy Crusade, when thousands of young people joined to help with teaching in the most remote places of the country.

He congratulated students and teachers for the historic deed and assured them that the great Crusade was the great victory of the people of Nicaragua after the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution.

The President also said that an essential right was upheld when the Crusade was launched: the right to knowledge.
