Pompeo is accused of supporting a coup in Türkiye

On Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu accused former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of supporting a 2016 coup attempt in his country.

Pompeo posted a tweet on the night of the event in Türkiye that he later deleted, which supported the terrorists’ actions, Cavusoglu said at a press briefing in this capital.

The foreign minister also criticized Pompeo’s statements about this nation published in his memoirs, which according to him, do not reflect the reality and are expressions of double standards.

Pompeo served as Secretary of State from April 2018 to January 2021 during Donald Trump’s administration.

A group of officers and soldiers of Türkiye’s Armed Forces attempted a coup against the Government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15, 2016.

The main clash was developed in Istanbul and Ankara, during which 250 persons were killed, not counting the coup plotters, and more than 2,000 were injured.
