Havana, August 21 (RHC)-- The duo of Pedro Vega and Darién Martínez stood out this Sunday for Cuba, on the first day of the Snipe Open World Championship, held in the coastal town of Cascais, Portugal.

According to the website www.snipe.org, Vega and Martinez placed 13th and 12th in the first two races, held at the Naval Club of this territory belonging to the district of Lisbon.

The other Cuban crew, made up by Nélido Manso and Sanlay Castro, placed 21st and 27th, respectively, a performance also considered outstanding within a fleet of 88 boats from 17 countries.

The most outstanding of this day were Brazilians Mario Sergio de Jesus and Henrique Wismiewski, who finished second and first, in that order, and Spaniards Gustavo del Castillo and Rafael del Castillo, first and fifth.

The second step of the second event went to the Americans Ernesto Rodriguez and Kathleen Tocke.

Belgians Juan Pezters and Nhatalie Janssens took third place in the first race, while Spaniards Alfredo Gonzalez and Cristian Sanchez took third place in the second race.

Tomorrow, Monday, the actions will continue, which will conclude on Thursday 25, and the Cubans, who are attending as guests as well as other crews, must maintain or improve their results.

Due to the number of participating boats, it will be important to be placed in the first half of the planned races, since those included in the group of 44, called Gold Fleet, will be the ones who will have the right to discuss the first places.

Nélido Manso, 1999 world champion in Marcia, together with Octavio Lorenzo, is among the world champions participating in Cascais.

Both Cuban Sports Glories, also accumulate three gold medals and one silver medal in Pan American Games, and one gold medal in Central American and Caribbean Games in Snipe, non-Olympic class.
