Nicaraguan government on Friday condemned at the Organization of American States (OAS) the political and economic model of capitalism that legitimized slavery, according to an official statement.

In an extraordinary virtual session of the OAS Permanent Council for the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Managua recognized the contributions of the African and Afro-descendants to the construction of European and American societies.

Lifestyle of the aforementioned societies was forged on the shoulders of millions of men and women with physical and spiritual strength as well as incomparable courage.

Likewise, the text showed the significance of commemorating this date, as it serves to honor around 15 million Africans taken from their homes and communities and separated from their families.

“Large ships were waiting for them to board up to 300 people, men and women separately, in overcrowding conditions, in which they could not even extend their arms and legs,” the statement said.

“Slavery was and continues to be an institutionalized industry, a crime against humanity without comparison in the history of this world,” the document stated.
