After the last performance of Terrenal —his latest play— in the Latin American and the Caribbean theater season Mayo Teatral (May Theater Festival), Argentine playwright and director Mauricio Kartun — one of the most important figures of Latin American theater, was awarded with El Gallo de La Habana, distinction awarded by Casa de las Americas to reward his outstanding achievements in the world of theater.

For Kartun, every single thing coming from Cuba has a special meaning, as it is embraced by a unique spirituality and communion. Thrilled by the occasion, he was grateful, along with his actors, for the award, presented by theater specialist Vivian Martínez Tabares, head of Casa de las Americas Theater Department.

The play he recently presented at the Hubert de Blanck theater hall, in Havana, is a revisitation of famous myth of Abel and Cain, with the expected conflict resolution. But the context and its implications are updated, in an entertaining intellectual exercise.

A lot of humor, strong characterization, sharp reflection on the human condition...define a staging that has been unanimously and positively welcomed by both the critics and the public in several theater festivals held in the region.

A theater made of strong foundations and unique style: that is Mauricio Kartun’s. That is why he is on top of the artistic avant-garde in his country, which is, everybody knows, a land prodigal in arts and thoughts.

The eleventh May Theater season will showcase plays from various countries in the region until Sunday. There will be performances in Havana and other cities in the country.
