Three dance shows by three different dance groups are the main stage proposals this weekend in Havana.

At the Tito Junco Hall of Bertolt Brecht Cultural Center, the Rosario Cárdenas company resumes its season of Brutal, world premiere by choreographer Nelson Reguera.

According to the program, the staging portrays the personal experiences of each of the artists involved, during the period of confinement. The scenes reveal a set of images organized in a limited space to convey the stories, alienations, privations, fears and struggles of human beings.

Under the 2013 National Dance Award Rosario Cárdenas’ general direction, the staging of Brutal brings back one of the closest disciples of the Cuban choreographer.

The performances, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

Tradition

The dancer and choreographer Johannes García is one of the iconic figures of the National Folkloric Ensemble, his powerful interpretations are still remembered in creations of that company. On September 21, 1992, after an intense career on stage, he founded the JJ Cuban Traditional Dance Company, which has become reference point for those who study and admire popular expressions of Cuban dance.

This company is a space for professional accomplishment and a training center for Cuban dancers. And their community work has been recognized by several institutions. But its greatest legacy is on the stage. It usually performs at important theaters in which the immense legacy of Cuban culture is recreated, with a unique vision of folklore.

The National Dance Award received by maestro García in 2020 recognizes, among other of his many artistic credentials, the contributions of this company —which was his dream— to the panorama of Cuban dance.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the company will perform a show today at the National Theater of Cuba, which will also join the celebrations of the Cabildo Obá Yemí Community Project, another of Johannes García's endeavors.

The title of the proposal is a declaration of principles: Here we are again. It is a selection of the most outstanding choreographies of the company's artistic career. The functions will take place at 8:30 p.m., in the Covarrubias hall of the National Theater.

A sung ballet

Ballet sung in one act: this is how El canto del amor triunfante is presented, a show by Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, directed by Miguel Iglesias, and Ensemble Habana XXI, to be premiered on stage this Friday.

Here is the story of a love triangle. The composer, Italian Paolo Coletta, was inspired by the homonymous story by Russian Ivan Turguieniev, which takes place in a Renaissance atmosphere, full of mystery and supernatural elements. Very much in the style of the gothic novel of romanticism.

That is the spirit of the choreographic version that the cast of Danza Contemporánea de Cuba will embrace, with the live performance of the Ensemble Habana XXI and the participation of soloists from the National Lyric Theater of Cuba.

The dancers will recreate in movements what the singers express.

The choreography was in charge of the Polish Ewa Wycichowska and Andrze Adamczak, while French Nathalie Marín and Cuban César Eduardo Ramos, leaders of the Ensemble, are responsible for the musical and artistic directions.

Music, theater and dance will converge in El canto…; It will be an integrating show that highlights the cultural links between Cuba, Poland, and Italy. The performances will be: Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 5:00 p.m., at the Avellaneda hall.
