Lavrov updates BRICS countries on Ukraine conflict

Moscow, May 19 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described his government's assessments of the situation in Ukraine and the progress of the military operation to his counterparts from the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

During the exchange via videoconference, there was a significant exchange of views on topical issues on the international agenda, according to a statement on the meeting from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministers discussed the need to support respect for collective principles in world affairs, regional conflicts, the fight against new challenges and threats, and the interaction of the five states on multilateral platforms.

“Much attention was paid to the current state and prospects of cooperation between the five parties,” the text further states.

According to the Russian diplomatic service, the meeting also included a separate session in the BRICS+ format with the participation of the foreign ministers of Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

“Interesting discussions were held on the state and prospects of global governance, highlighting the central role of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the G20,” he noted.
