New Delhi, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba has immunized nearly 60 percent of its population against Covid-19 with its own vaccines, despite many difficulties imposed by the United States blockade, Peoples Dispatch's website stressed on Friday.

Until October 12, 6.5 million Cubans have completed their vaccination scheme against the coronavirus, accounting for 58.1 percent of the country's inhabitants, the publication noted.

Cuba began immunizing its pediatric population on September 6, becoming the first country in the world to inoculate children aged two years and older.

So far, 9,654,453 Cubans have received at least one dose of the Abdala (CIGB-66), Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus vaccines, developed in the Caribbean country.

This figure represents 86.3 percent of Cuba's total population, both adults aged 19 years and older, and children aged 2-18.

According to Our World in Data online publication, Cuba is one of the first two countries worldwide, along with the United Arab Emirates, where more doses of vaccines have been administered per every 100 people.

Cuba began exporting its vaccines and in June, Venezuela became the first country to purchase 12 million doses of the Abdala (CIGB-66) vaccine.

In September, Vietnam signed an agreement with Cuba to purchase 10 million doses of Abdala (CIGB-66) and both nations agreed to produce them in the Asian country.

Abdala (CIGB-66) and Soberana 02 are among the world's five most effective vaccines.
