Organized in collaboration with the Cuban Museum of Dance, the exhibition started from the legacy of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, a cornerstone in the development of this discipline on the island and an example for outstanding disciples Loipa Araújo, Aurora Bosch, Josefina Méndez and Mirta Plá.

Under the title “Jewels on Stage,” the exhibition is part of the activities by the Office of the Historian of Havana during Cuban Culture Day, taking place from October 10 through 20.

“During the 40s and 50s of the 20th century, Alonso’s success and fame grew in the United States and the world in general,” states the presentation of the project, which gathers pieces that became a testimony of the prestige and recognition achieved by her.

The text also highlights the work by the 1998 National Dance Award winner beyond “her triumphs,” as she promoted the development of this art with the foundation in 1948 of the company, currently known as the National Ballet of Cuba, and a school.

The exhibition displays some of the programs performed by Alonso in the United States, along with the four pupils, such as the classic “Coppelia” at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, in July 1959.
