The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) announced today in Havana that the French Film Festival—set to conclude on October 26—has enjoyed a strong public turnout.

At a press conference, ICAIC President Alexis Triana highlighted the commitment of organizers, audiences, and the French Embassy to the promotion of the seventh art.

Meanwhile, ICAIC’s Director of Programming, Yenisel Torres, reported that with 34 screenings held so far, attendance has surpassed 3,000 spectators as of last week. She cited Emilia Pérez, Like Magic, and Monsieur Aznavour—all 2024 premieres—as examples of particularly well-attended showings.

Torres added that beginning this Wednesday, the final three films from the 18 selected for this year’s showcase will be screened.

The romantic drama Remorques (1941) and the dramatic comedy Monkey in Winter (1962)—both tributes to French actor Jean Gabin—along with the social drama The Story of Souleymane (2024), will be shown at Havana’s 23 y 12, Acapulco, and Yara theaters.

Triana and Torres also praised the commitment of the eastern province of Granma, a satellite venue of the festival, noting its perseverance in holding screenings despite heavy rains that affected the area last week.

The 26th French Film Festival, which began on October 15, features a lineup of 18 films, including three animated movies and three dedicated to Jean Gabin. The 12 new releases in the program have collectively received 40 nominations and 12 César Awards.
