Energy drinks are associated with an increased risk of mental health problems among children and young people, a study by the Center for Translational Research in Public Health at the universities of Newcastle and Teesside concluded.

According to the research, which analyzed data from 57 studies involving more than 1.2 million children and young people from more than 21 countries, consumption of energy drinks could cause anxiety, stress, depression and suicidal thoughts.

The specialists in charge of the study pointed out that the ingestion of these liquids was more common among boys than among girls, and is also related to an increase in risky behaviors such as substance use, violence and unprotected sex.

Such consumption is also associated with an increased risk of poor academic performance, sleep problems and unhealthy eating habits.

The experts considered it necessary to adopt regulatory measures to restrict the sales of energy drinks to children and young people.
