A total of 485 positive cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant were detected in 20 Mexican states, the Health Secretariat reported on Saturday.

In its updated report, it points out that the most affected states are Baja California Sur, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Yucatan and Sinaloa, with a swift transmission process. There were only 28 cases in May, but this figure had climbed to 223 by June 18 and rose to 482 in the first weeks of July.

Cedro Tanda, coordinator of the SARS-CoV-2 sequencing project at the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), explained that the capital is the most affected territory, with 275 positive cases.

In May, the Delta variant in the capital made up 3.8 percent of the samples that were examined; however, it currently makes up 60 percent, he said. Another territory affected by this strain is Mexico State, where there was just a case on May 12, but the number rose to 27 in the first weeks of June; they amount to 83 now.

The three variants, Alfa, Delta and Omega, are in Mexico now. The expert said that, nationwide, the Delta variant made up 2.9 percent of the total of the samples sequenced in May; it reached 19 percent in the first days of July.
