Cuba's new Family Code, submitted to a popular referendum on Sunday, shows a heterogeneous and inclusive society, which continues betting on more goodness and benefits for its citizens.

Roberto Morales, a member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), made this statement after casting his vote in an unprecedented event in Cuba’s history on Sunday.

“This is a day of festivity and joy for most Cuban citizens,” the party leader said, adding that the “Yes” vote will turn Cuba into a fairer nation.

He added that some sectors of the population were not represented in the previous Family Code, in force since 1975. After this Code is approved, protection would be provided to all families, according to their interests.

The referendum was preceded by a specialized and popular consultation, which enriched the legislation with the citizens’ criteria to reach the new version on which nearly eight million Cubans are casting their vote on Sunday.

Morales called “to vote without prejudices,” and beyond the limitations, the country is experiencing due to the United States blockade, as they will also be overcome.
