Havana, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez on Monday congratulated pianist and composer Jose Maria Vitier, who was granted the 2021 National Music Award on Sunday.

“Congratulations dear Maestro (…),” the president wrote on Twitter, a tweet that contained two photos of the moment when Vitier received the award.

On Sunday, the composer of music for cinema, television and theater was honored by the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, which performed a program of his works and invited solo artists such as soprano Barbara Llanes, flutist Niurka Gonzalez and pianist Marcos Madrigal.

Vitier, 68, descends from a prominent family of intellectuals and artists. His parents Cintio Vitier (1921-2009) and Fina Garcia Marruz are two eminent Cuban writers, and his brother Sergio (1948-2016) was granted the National Music Award in 2014.
