Havana, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel today praised the support of the military in cleanup efforts of Havana after the impact of hurricane Ian's winds last Tuesday.

From his profile on the social network Twitter, the president thanked chiefs, officers, cadets, soldiers and combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) and the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), ‘essential personnel in difficult hours’.

The Civil Defense decreed on Wednesday, September 28, the Recovery Phase for the provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, after Category 3 hurricane Ian left Cuba.

According to official data, the greatest damages reported in those territories  are in housing, electrical lines and agriculture.

In the case of Pinar del Río, the country’s main tobacco producer, the consequences of the event have affected around 95 percent of the 12,000 houses used for curing tobacco leaves, where 33,000 tons of the leaf were stored.

The main problems in the capital are the supply of drinking water due to power shortage and the territories of Artemisa and Mayabeque have reported serious damage to plantations, in addition to the lack of electricity service and the destruction of dozens of houses.
