The spirit of unity during the election process was decisive to a victory in this Sunday's elections, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Monday.

Under hashtag #CubaGanó, President Díaz-Canel stressed “the Cuban people said the last word to that extraordinary vote amid rough conditions Cuba and the world are currently facing. There is only one way to respond: to comply with the people.”

On Twitter, the Cuban leader posted that the new National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) faces enormous challenges to overcome present economic and social plight.

Early on Twitter, the president praised his confidence in the Cuban people, who “came out to defend the Revolution, despite draconian measures imposed by the United States, despite fierce campaign and calls for abstentionism”.

Díaz-Canel is one of the 470 deputies elected with more than 50% of valid votes.

As many as 6,164,876 Cubans cast their votes past Sunday, according to the preliminary report informed by the National Electoral Council President Alina Balseiro.
