United Nations, Jun 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba thanked the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for its support in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and also in the recovery efforts that the Caribbean country is developing today.

According to a note released by the island’s mission to the United Nations, Cuban ambassador Yusnier Romero stressed that UNICEF’s work has contributed to strengthening the capacities of health institutions, especially in centers dedicated to minors and pregnant women.

The diplomat, who spoke the day before at the Annual Session of the Unicef Executive Board, expressed Cuba’s commitment to guarantee the health and well-being of minors, as well as all their rights.

In this regard, Romero stressed, in Cuba there is nothing more important than the life of a child.

The achievements of the Caribbean island in terms of child protection are numerous, for example, as part of the immunization strategy against Covid-19, pediatric vaccination was prioritized, he detailed.

My country was the first to immunize its child population between the ages of two and 18, and coverage of over 96 percent was achieved, continued the Cuban ambassador.

Simultaneously, the National Vaccination Program, universal and free, guarantees the immunization of the child population against 13 diseases, of which six remain eliminated, he indicated.

Similarly, Romero reiterated his country’s support and commitment to the work and mandate of UNICEF, as well as Cuba’s efforts to continue building a society where childhood is happy.
