Cuban scientists are working on a vaccine against Covid-19 amid the successful beginning of the first stage of clinical trials on the candidate known as Soberana 01 (Sovereign 01).

As part of the unstoppable fight against the diseases caused by the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, the trial period started on Monday and results will be available in early 2021.

According to Yury Valdes, deputy director of the Finlay Vaccines Institute, which is responsible for the project, 20 Cubans were vaccinated on Monday and none has shown serious adverse effects.

On the way to prove the safety of Soberana 01, the scientist wrote on Twitter, noting the high professionalism of the team that is carrying out the phase one of clinical trials.

'Scientific rigor, commitment to the project and love for life. A historic day, it paves the long way but with total willingness to walk through it successfully,' Valdes added.

For her part, Dagmar Garcia, director of Research at the Finlay Vaccines Institute, twitted that 20 Cubans, who are confidence in science, offered their arm so that Soberana 01 can reach its final destination soon.

'Science contemplates you proudly. Together we can,' said the expert when referring to the non-existence of problems during the trials.

The Cuban Public Register of Clinical Trials said on August 18 that the study will be carried out randomly in a controlled, adaptive and multicenter environment to evaluate the safety, reactogenicity (adverse effects) and immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate, which will be administered in two doses.

The trial will involve 676 people aged 19 to 80.
