Havana, May 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuba today celebrates World Telecommunications and Information Society Day by prioritizing the development of infrastructure in order to build capacity at all levels to ensure the ICTs accessibility.

In an official statement, the Cuban Ministry of Communications (Mincom) stressed that the Caribbean nation supports initiatives and projects to empower different priority groups such as children, women and the elderly to approach Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

In the case of work with adults, the GeroClub, a space created for senior citizens to contribute to the National Program of Comprehensive Attention to the Elderly, is implemented throughout the country by the Young Computer and Electronics Clubs (JCCE), according to the text.

In addition, according to the report, the development and modernization of the technological and telecommunications infrastructure continues, as a revitalizing factor of the economy, in order to advance in a sustainable manner in accordance with the country’s economic possibilities.

World Telecommunications and Information Society Day is celebrated every May 17.

The date was chosen since 1969, commemorating two significant events: the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention, in 1865.

Digital technologies for healthy aging is the central theme of this 2022.
