Cuba Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Havana, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez today highlighted the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The foreign minister posted on Twitter that this nation develops care programs and a strategy to put the individual in the foreground, enhancing their comprehensive development, self-realization and full social integration.

In 1992, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) established the commemoration of the date, which this year has as its theme Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities in building an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world.

It is a matter of facing the crisis caused by the pandemic with a comprehensive approach, offering these individuals the necessary inclusion, since they are one of the most excluded groups affected by the disease, the UN website published.

In the case of Cuba, there are several civil society organizations that bring together people with some kind of disability, among them the Cuban Association of the Physically and Motor Disabled, the Association of the Deaf and the National Association of the Blind.

In addition, more than 35 thousand Cubans are protected by State public policies and more than 150 students with these characteristics have access to university education every year.

Cuba recently assured its commitment to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its willingness to leave no one unprotected in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
