China warned today that the military alliance between the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom (Aukus) is a typical act of cold war and will endanger regional peace and stability.

Wang Wenbin, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, accused the three countries of going too far in pursuing geopolitical interests, saying that there is a new agreement to sell U.S. nuclear submarines to Canberra.

According to him, such an action will only lead to an arms race and affect nuclear non-proliferation regime in the Asia-Pacific area, as it ignores the concerns of the international community.

Wang expressed disappointment with the pact and said that the three countries are pushing the International Atomic Energy Organization to get the approval of the pact.

China has always rejected the Aukus alliance as they consider it destructive, focused on fueling confrontation through the collaboration of its members and will turn the region into a battleground for geopolitical games.

He also deplored the West’s accusations about China´s alleged threat with its growing development.

The Aukus plans in a first phase to equip the Australian Navy with eight nuclear-powered submarines, with much longer time under sea without the need to surface.

So far, only six other nations have such ships: the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, India and France.

Some say that such an initiative seeks to counter Beijing’s military might and serve as a useful instrument of defense in the event of exercises against the island of Taiwan, the South Sea and other areas of the Asia-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, Australia defined it as ‘necessary’ and will allocate 245 billion dollars to it over the next three decades.
