Havana, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) Casa de las Americas (House of the Americas), an institution founded on April 28, 1959, is recalling on Monday the holding of its first public activity, 63 years ago, with a concert of American baritone William Warfield.

In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, Jaime Gomez Triana, Cuban theater expert and vice president of that institution mentioned the press release published then about the singer, largely renowned in the art world for his concerts and opera performances.

According to this intellectual, the opening of Casa de las Americas symbolizes the willingness of the nascent Revolution to evaluate the cultural expressions of the peoples from the continent and establish bridges, exchanges and contacts with prominent figures.

“After that concert, Havana and Washignton broke diplomatic relations and the US pressured the nations of the region to break ties with Cuba. However, this institution received artists and personalities from this area,” he said.

According to Triana, they sought to keep a permanent dialogue with the most authentic practices of geographically near societies and acknowledged that six decades after, this institution has managed to preserve its foundational principles, devised since 1959.

He also recalled the 100th birthday of Haydee Santamaria, on December 30, 2022. She was the founder of Casa de las Americas, a Cuban guerrilla woman and politician, hero of the republic and one of the assailants of the Moncada Barracks in 1953.

“All the work carried out in this iconic building honors her life and prominence in Cuban history. She undoubtedly contributed originality, spirit, commitment and a vision in the unity of writers and artists, present in current times,” he said.
