Havana, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) The Alicia Alonso Havana International Ballet Festival will raise the curtain on October 20, date that marks the celebration of the Cuban Culture Day, according to a press release issued by the organizers.

According to the information released by the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), the 27th edition of the event will run until November 13 and will be the starting point of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the company that will last until the end of 2023.

Chaired by prima ballerina and BNC director, Viengsay Valdés, the event proposes a series of performances of the classic Giselle, with guest stars in the leading roles, as well as galas with premieres of works created especially for the occasion.

The main venue will be the National Theater of Cuba, while cultural institutions in the provinces of Matanzas, Cienfuegos and Pinar del Rio will host other activities included in the festival’s calendar.

With more than 60 years of history, the biannual event is one of the most traditional and prestigious in the world of dance, while extolling the legacy of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso.

It’s been four years since the festival was last held. It was in 2018 with representatives from a score of countries and returns to the stage this year since the edition scheduled for 2020 had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 that put on pause the cultural industry worldwide.
