Acosta Danza Brings the Spirit of Cuba to the UK

It has been customary since the presentations of the Cuban company Acosta Danza began in Great Britain: standing ovations of several minutes, sold-out theaters applauding the artists at the end of each show.

The group directed by the first dancer Carlos Acosta (an old acquaintance of the British public) toured several cities in that country with the show 100% Cubano, premiered in late January in Avellaneda Ward of the National Theater of Cuba.

As a whole, it’s a choreographic approach to several of the essences of national identity, from history, the way in which daily challenges are assumed, to the unique relationship with the most rooted sonorities.

No wonder the British press has highlighted the Cubanness of the program: the spirit of a people on stage.

The tour began last week at the famous Sadler's Wells Theater in London, with performances on February 9^th, 10^th, 11^th, and 12^th. Until this Wednesday there were presentations at the Royal Concert Hall, in Nottingham, and the next stops will be the Lowry, in Manchester (22^nd and 23^rd); the New Theatre, at Hull (25^th and 26^th); the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury (March 1^st and 2^nd); and the Theater Royal, in Plymouth (4^th and 5^th).

The highlights are the premieres: Liberto, by Raúl Reinoso, and Híbrido, by the young choreographer Norge Cedeño.

In addition, the program presents the works Paysage, soudain la nuit, by the Swedish Pontus Lidberg; Impronta, created by the Catalan María Rovira, and De punta a cabo, a piece based on the original by the Cuban Alexis Fernández (Maca).

According to a press release, after these presentations in the United Kingdom, the company will travel to France to offer eight performances of the same program at the Chaillot Theater in Paris during the month of March.
