“When you have a loved one who suffers from this disease, it can be devastating,” the star told the New York Daily News at an event sponsored by FACES, an organization that funds research on epilepsy, at the Langone Medical Center at New York University.

“You know how it affects their lives, their future, their opportunities and you want desperately to find mitigation. You want to find a way that they can live a comfortable and effective life.”

The 73-year-old actor disclosed for the first time the affliction of his daughter, whom he had with late screenwriter Melissa Mathison, and he expressed admiration for the “perseverance, talent and strength” Georgia has displayed in dealing with the issue.

“She’s my hero. I love her,” the actor said.

Ford said that Georgia suffered her first epileptic seizure when she was a little girl, but the illness was not diagnosed at the time and she was treated with medication for migraines.

Despite experiencing other convulsions over the years, Ford said that it was not until Georgia suffered an attack in London, where she was studying, that they went to New York University, where she was finally diagnosed.

With the proper medication prescribed, Georgia has not suffered a seizure in eight years, said Ford.

Ford is the father of four other children and is currently married to actress Callista Flockhart.
