Prevention: key to counteract cervical cancer
Geneva, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) Cervical Cancer kills more than 300,000 women each year, therefore the World Prevention Day is celebrated today with a call for timely medical care.
Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that this could be the first cancer eliminated if 90 percent of girls are vaccinated, 70 percent of women are screened and 90 percent of women suffering from it receive treatment.
The entity pointed out that nine out of ten of these deaths occur in the poorest countries.
It is the fourth most common cancer in females and consists of a malignant tumor in the lower part of the uterus and, but it is preventable by vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), an infection transmitted through sexual contact.
The international body also mentioned effective secondary prevention approaches, with the detection and treatment of precancerous lesions.
Treatments for sick women include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, which can be very effective.
Specialists insist on the need for a comprehensive approach to prevent, detect and treat the disease until it is eliminated as a public health problem.
