St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov today highlighted the exemplary management of the Cuban government in the face of Hurricane Melissa and reaffirmed the willingness to continue strengthening the historic ties of cooperation between Russia and Cuba.

At the conclusion of his official visit to the island, the high-ranking Russian official specifically recognized the work of President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and local authorities in protecting the population during the recent meteorological event, which led to the evacuation of more than 700,000 people.

"We want to recognize this great teamwork by the Cuban people and government in the face of difficulties," stated Beglov, who visited the province of Santiago de Cuba to assess the damage and reiterate his nation's support.

The work agenda included a tribute at the Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery, where the Russian delegation paid respects to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, on the ninth anniversary of his passing.

Beglov held working meetings with provincial governors and Cuban Government authorities, following up on existing collaboration agreements and examining new avenues for cooperation.

In the educational sphere, the participation of Cuban students in the St. Petersburg festival "The Scarlet Sails" was recognized, and an initiative for reciprocal child exchanges between the two nations was welcomed.

Governor Beglov also thanked the Cuban side for its willingness to erect a monument to the internationalist combatants who have united both peoples in fundamental historical moments.

The visit concluded with the Russian delegation's participation in the Havana International Fair 2025, where the signing of important commercial contracts that will contribute to the economic development of the Caribbean nation is expected.
