The President of the National Assembly of Angola, Carolina Cerqueira, traveled today to Cuba for a visit focused on strengthening interparliamentary cooperation and in response to an invitation from her counterpart in the Caribbean nation.
Cuban Ambassador Oscar León was among those who bid farewell to the head of the Angolan legislature before her departure. According to statements to the press by the Parliament’s First Secretary, Manuel Lopes Dembo, the trip “will contribute to deepening the historic relations of friendship between the two countries.”
Cerqueira will remain on the island until September 17. Among the various activities included in her program are a visit to the headquarters of the National Assembly of People’s Power at the Capitol in Havana, as well as talks with her Cuban counterpart, Esteban Lazo.
Lopes Dembo emphasized that both parties will exchange views on working methods and explore avenues to further strengthen interparliamentary ties.
He added that the Angolan legislative leader will also tour sites of political, cultural, and technological interest and hold a meeting with members of the Angolan community residing in Cuba.
The secretary of the Assembly underscored the bonds of friendship between the two nations and peoples, “dating back to Angola’s liberation struggle, the defense of sovereignty, and the building of the nation, for which Cuba’s contribution in the provision of services and the training of professionals has been invaluable.”
