The Cuban government is advancing a genetic development program in Camagüey, the country’s leading livestock province, to strengthen domestic food production.

According to reports from Radio Cadena Agramonte, the program is being implemented by the Camagüey branch of the Cuban Association of Animal Production and focuses on promoting technologies that accelerate the breeding of improved livestock across all 13 municipalities of the province.

The project aims to stimulate research and expand expertise in working with diverse animal species, thereby enhancing the sustainability of the agricultural sector. Key components include expanding Cuba’s national gene banks and providing training for farmers through workshops, manual consultations, and access to specialized publications.

These modern tools are designed to improve decision-making, genetic management, and breed enhancement—all seen as essential for long-term food security. With a strong emphasis on applied science, the initiative also seeks to revive a culture of dedicated livestock care, prioritizing practices that support genetic selection, animal welfare, and efficient production.

The program is structured within a framework of productive ethics and environmental responsibility. Planned activities include training for producers, technicians, and community advisors, as well as establishing networks for exchanging knowledge and experiences.

The overarching goal is to build a robust culture of innovation that delivers tangible benefits for rural families and regional food sovereignty. The adoption of these technologies is expected not only to boost production but also to encourage ongoing research and improve access to specialized information.

This effort is intended to strengthen national genetics and increase the resilience of the agricultural sector in the face of economic and environmental challenges, benefiting both the province and the nation as a whole.
