Triple jumpers Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea will lead the 17-member Cuban delegation at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled from September 13 to 27.

In a statement to the press, Cuban sports authorities confirmed that Pérez and Povea, gold and silver medalists at the last World Indoor Championships, head a team that also includes triple jumpers Lázaro Martínez, Andy Hechavarría and Cristian Nápoles.

“Nápoles was included by invitation after World Athletics completed an access process to the event, which also included direct qualifying marks and entry by ranking,” the release stated.

Long-distance runner Anileidis Ochoa also received an invitation to compete in the 5000 meters, completing the event quotas.

At the previous World Championships in Budapest two years ago, Cuba competed with 21 athletes and reached the podium with Martínez (silver), Nápoles (bronze) and Leyanis (bronze).

More than 2,000 athletes from 195 countries participated in the Hungarian capital, numbers expected to be similar in Tokyo. During that edition, two world records, seven championship bests, and 73 national records were set.

A total of 23 nations won at least one gold medal, and 46 countries celebrated a medal of any color.

  • Leyanis Pérez (triple jump)

  • Liadagmis Povea (triple jump)
