A reaffirmation of Cuba’s commitment to the progressive improvement of public transportation is reflected in the launch of two new electric tricycle routes in the municipality of Morón. This initiative complements the recent implementation of microbus services in the provincial capital and the reactivation of local train routes.

Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Cuba’s Minister of Transportation, announced on his Facebook page that "the system begins with 10 tricycles operating along two routes that connect key points in the area," thereby offering greater ease of mobility between El Gallo Park and the Patria community to the Morón hospital.

He described this initiative as a more accessible, sustainable, and locally oriented transportation option for residents, forming part of a broader effort to strengthen public transportation services with light, electric vehicles that have already proven effective in other municipalities across the country.

Rodríguez Dávila emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to providing mobility solutions, particularly for short distances and areas with high daily demand.

The minister added that continued development of the service is expected, including the installation of charging stations powered by renewable energy. This reaffirms the system’s status as fully ecological, as it does not rely on fossil fuels and avoids emissions of polluting gases.

The electric tricycles designated for Morón were evenly distributed across the two new routes and began operations at dawn on Saturday, August 2. Each unit has a capacity of six passengers, with a fare set at an affordable 10 Cuban pesos per ride.

The route from El Gallo Park to the hospital traverses much of the city and facilitates access to various public service facilities. These include medical centers, schools, commercial and food service establishments, and workplaces, providing convenience for both the general public and local employees.

The route to and from the Patria community is particularly beneficial for students and workers, as it serves a corridor with several educational institutions, including the Ministry of Tourism Training Center, a scientific institution, and locations of both state-run and private businesses. As such, it is considered one of the most frequented routes in the area.

Yadirka Ferrer, a resident of the Patria community and a nurse in the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the Roberto Rodríguez Fernández Provincial General Teaching Hospital, described the initiative as a competitive alternative, especially given the high prices of animal- and human-drawn vehicles such as horse carts and bicycle taxis, which burden workers and students.

Julia Inés Nordelo Zayas, director of the local television channel Morón TeVé, praised the route selection and fare structure in a social media post, calling it an excellent decision.

Celia María López Reyes, President of the Municipal Government of People's Power, urged residents to use the new service responsibly and with discipline.

As part of the festivities marking July 26, National Rebellion Day — which had Ciego de Ávila as the central host this year — several microbus routes were inaugurated in the provincial capital. These connect strategic points in the city, widely known as the "City of Portals," and help alleviate longstanding public transport challenges.

Additionally, after a six-year hiatus, the train service from Morón to the town of Perea, located near the border with Sancti Spíritus province, has resumed operations. This route facilitates transportation to and from various communities along the Northern Line.

These measures have been met with expressions of gratitude from residents of Ciego de Ávila, both in person and on social media, as they recognize the government’s ongoing efforts to revitalize and diversify public transportation options.
