Sonal Madhuwantha Subasinghe Mudiyanselage, a young student from Sri Lanka, expressed his gratitude today for the opportunity to pursue medical studies in Cuba.

Subasinghe Mudiyanselage shared his appreciation during a meeting with Ambassador Andrés González at the Cuban mission in Colombo.

The Sri Lankan student is set to travel soon to the Caribbean nation, where he will begin his studies in September at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).

He was selected through a scholarship program that Cuba offers to Sri Lanka as part of the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two countries, which mark their 66th anniversary this Wednesday.

According to the Cuban diplomatic mission, several Sri Lankan students are currently enrolled at ELAM, a university that is part of Cuba’s Comprehensive Health Program and welcomes young people from across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

Sri Lanka has more than 100 graduates from Cuban institutions in fields such as information technology, sports, engineering, medicine, and other disciplines.
