Over one hundred people gathered in Spain to commemorate Cuba’s National Day of Rebellion with a vibrant demonstration that marched through the center of Madrid on Saturday.
Representing the State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC), which brings together over 60 organizations, participants chanted slogans such as "End the U.S. blockade," "Stop the hostility against the Cuban people," and "Long live July 26," as they paraded through the streets.
In a statement read at the conclusion of the march near the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organizers highlighted the long-standing tradition of honoring the 72nd anniversary of the assault on Cuba’s Moncada and Céspedes barracks on July 26, 1953. The historic attack, led by Fidel Castro, marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, according to a dispatch from the Prensa Latina news agency in Madrid.
"This heroic feat against the Batista dictatorship, imposed on Cuba by the U.S. government," signaled the start of the Revolution, "whose victory in 1959 ended American hegemony and the oppression and exploitation of the Cuban people," the statement read.
The manifesto also praised the social achievements of the Cuban Revolution, particularly in healthcare, education, and culture, and expressed support for Cuba's democratic system.
Speakers further noted that Cuba has endured repeated acts of aggression from the United States, including attempted invasions, the introduction of agricultural pests and human diseases, and provocations linked to the U.S. military base in Guantánamo, as well as aerial violations.
The statement condemned the longstanding economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed by Washington for over 60 years, which was further intensified by 242 additional sanctions implemented under former President Donald Trump.
It also denounced the Trump administration’s decision to reinstate Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. According to the manifesto, Cuba is, in fact, a victim of terrorism, which has allegedly been carried out with impunity from U.S. soil by the Cuban-American far-right with the support of the U.S. government.
