Cuban Yarisleidis Cirilo won the gold medal today in the C1 200 meters event of the World Junior and Under-23 Sprint Canoeing Championships, held in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal.
With a time of 47.26 seconds, the Olympic bronze medalist in Paris 2024 reaffirmed her excellent physical condition in the European aquatic track, dominating the competition with authority.
Cirilo was the only one to go under 48 seconds on Sunday, relegating Spain's Viktoriia Yarchevska (48.08) and Russia's neutral-flagged Ekaterina Shliapnikova (48.47) to second and third place, respectively.
The regatta was fast and high level. Cirilo herself had clocked 45.88 seconds in the heat, in a championship that brought together more than 1700 competitors from 66 countries.
The young Antillean was the only Cuban representative in the competition, competing exclusively in the under-23 category and in the distance of C1 200 meters.
Her performance consolidates her position as one of the great figures of world canoeing, with a view to new challenges in the senior category.
Cirilo is entered in two events for the Milan 2025 World Championships, scheduled for August 20-24, 2025.
After her triumph, she, her coach Nelson Perales, and the team's physiotherapist will stay three weeks in Portugal before traveling to Italy.
