Cuba prepared its first National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory document, corresponding to the period 1990-2022, according to reports from the sector.

The country took this step in compliance with the common commitment made by the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

The pollutants monitored were carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, the former being the main GHG, Granma newspaper reported.

In a lecture, PhD. Rosmary López, Senior Researcher and head of the Center for Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry (CECONT) at the Institute of Meteorology, stated that this report is important for decision-making and the implementation of actions to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Its preparation identifies the sectors and activities responsible for the main National Greenhouse Gas emissions and absorptions, according to a Granma article.

In this regard, the professor at the Higher Institute of Applied Technologies and Sciences emphasized that the inventory highlighted the sectors with the highest greenhouse gas emissions in Cuba: energy, agriculture, and waste, generated by numerous sources.
