Luanda, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party has a lead of 86.41 percent of the valid votes corresponding to the fifth general elections in Angola, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) reported on Thursday.

In a press briefing, CNE spokesman Lucas Quilundo presented the official provisional data about the behavior of the elections, for each of the 19 electoral circles (one national and 18 provincial).

With 86.41 percent of the votes, the MPLA has 52.08 percent in its favor, followed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) party (42.98 percent), and the Social Renewal Party (1.18 percent).

According to the preliminary report, in Luanda the UNITA party registered 62.93 percent, after 77.12 percent of the votes for the provincial circle were counted, and the MPLA accumulated 33.06 percent.

More than 14,399,000 Angolan citizens, among them some 22,500 residents abroad, were eligible to vote for the 2022 elections, in which the diaspora was included for the first time.

The vote results will determine the future composition of the National Assembly (unicameral congress), as well as the president and vice president of the Republic, for a five-year term.
