Cuban Deputies Analyze Coffee Production

The Cuban Parliament's Agriculture and Food Commission examined a strategy Tuesday to improve coffee production in the island for the 2010-2015 period.

The deputies meeting at the Havana Convention Center agreed that there is potential to consolidate the export quality of Cuban coffee and increase import substitution.

The Agriculture Ministry said the last crop amounted to only 6,000 tons of coffee, one of the lowest in history. This forced the Cuban authorities to import 18,000 tons to satisfy domestic demand.

Leonardo Martinez, president of the Commission, highlighted the need to improve prices to producers, and so avoid mobilizing human resources from the cities for harvesting the crops.

The Agriculture Ministry proposed to improve the life conditions of the coffee producers and their communities and to improve the quality of coffee for internal consumption and export.
