Discotherapy with Patricio Amaro
By: Adis Morera Though it’s true we have in our country talented young pop singers, there’s one especially who stands out for the versatility and charisma with which he captivates the public through the magic of his songs. That is the case of Patricio Amaro. This time it’s presented differently, showing us his recent album: Sweet Madness. With his music he is able to win publics from all ages, and this was demonstrated during the concert that took place last Friday at Cuba Pavilion. Patricio affirms that, contrary to previous disks, his intention with the latter was to reach people through a much more romantic language, but without edging on ballads of silly heartbreak or sufferings for unrequited loves. For Amaro, love is not a feeling of sadness, and much less a barrier that prevent us from being happy, like he says: «Love in my disk is treated positively, there’s no cry in it, I meant it to be so, so when people listen to it they feel like they want to live, and step over all the problems. All in all the disk is a therapy». In interview for Cubasi, he comments more on the production of the album and of his new projects. - Sweet Madness is the title of your new CD, why this title? - Sweet Madness because it’s a philosophy I took 2 years ago and deals with positivism. The song that gives title to the disk was written almost at the end of the recording of the songs. This song, next to «This Heart», they support my personality, my way of composing and how I wanted to musically express myself in comparison to the first album that was not even close to this one. Sweet Madness summarizes my expectations and musical intentions that I don't want to fall in easy formulas and at the same time, I’m saying: that is the way I want life, like a Sweet Madness. - In the disk can be felt a tendency to ballads, leaving behind his rock-and-roll style, very different from your first album, what is this change due to? - It’s due, as I explained before, to a very personal need of expressing myself. My voice is kind of unusual and typical, it’s something that characterizes me and maybe for that reason people think that I am rocker, but I’m not. I can play rock, but I can also play boleros, in fact I am playing both in my concerts. My album includes more dance songs than ballads, even the ballads I wrote are moved and with a very-high tempo. - Have you planned to make a national tour to promote your disk? - I will be giving 6 concerts in coming days, it’s a vocal challenge because as you could see, these are not easy songs, they require of a ample spectrum and technique or else you’ll end up hoarse. - How has the public welcomed this material? - We are very happy my band and I. I must confess that I am in love with my public, to reach them fills me with satisfaction. My record house is satisfied: of the 3000 disks produced, almost the half has been sold. - Then it met your expectations? - It surpassed them, the disk is licensed for Europe, United States, Mexico, and Canada, under the record house Cristal Record. How come I won’t be happy? I am super-happy. - Could you comment on the project you keep with Edesio Alejandro and son? - We started making songs for movies, documentary films and television series, like the case of «Pelusin del Monte». It was an empathy born after the first album, A donde vas Corazon (Where are you going darling). Above everything else, I am a huge fan of Edesio and his musical work, working with him is a unique experience, meeting him personally is even greater. Outside music, we keep very good personal relationships, I think of him as my father, like Cristian is my brother. An important figure of Cuban music like Edesio Alejandro who counts on me as a friend and singer and songwriter in his projects... what else could I ask of life? - Do you plan to continue ahead with this project and your solo career? - I’ll answer that with a song, or better, with two: This sweet madness I want it for a lifetime.
