Cuba Readies for Youth Olympic Games
Cuba readies to participate in the first Youth Olympic Games scheduled for Singapore from August 14 to the 27 with the participation of nearly 3,600 athletes.
The Cuban team will include 43 competitors who participated in the most recent National School Games representing 10 of the country’s 14 provinces.
Out of the 26 sports disciplines included in the program of the Games, Cuba will compete in 15: athletics, diving, triathlon, judo, fencing, weightlifting, canoeing, rowing, sailing, taekwondo, wrestling, modern pentathlon, boxing, volleyball and artistic gymnastics.
As in other major international multi-sport events, Cuba’s main hopes are in combat sports and in athletics.
On Thursday, during a ceremony at the Granma Memorial in Havana, the national delegation that will participate in the sports meeting in Singapore received the Cuban flag that will accompany them to the Games from the hands of the president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Jose Ramon Fernandez. Volleyball star Wilfredo Leon received the flag.
